SAN GAVINO - UNDERGROUND TOMBS

Saint Gavino Cathedral, the biggest sardinian church and one of the most beautiful and significative example of the Romanesque – Pisan style, is situated about 100 metres from our hotel. Saint Gavino’s Cathedral was built in the early middle ages, in the year 1111, and part of its fame it’s due to an original architectonical structure which presents, unique in Italy, two apses at the extremities of the church and one of them replaces the façade.
Inside the Cathedral are guarded the mortal remains of the martyrs Gavino, Proto and Gianuario, patron and saints of our town.
The archeological and culture route proceeds with the pre Christian Necropolis, a relevant outdoor treasure, situated Near the Cathedral.
The Necropolis came to the light in several different diggings which attested the extension and the importance of this funeary area. Constituted by twenty limestone tombs it has an enormous historical value since it states the cult for the dead and the progresive abandoment of cremation for burial.
