SURROUNDINGS

Porto Torres surroundings are particularly rich under an archelogical, historical and naturalistic point of of view and give the chance to have quick, unforgettable short trips.
One of the most beautiful places is the wide known Asinara Island National Park.

Asinara National Park
The first human traces found in the Asinara belong to the pre nuragic period and are stated by the Domus de Janas of Campu Perdu and by several discoveries of flints and obsidian.
However, the first real colonization belongs to the Middle Ages and it’s stated by the building of Saint Andrea Camaldolite monastery in Punta Maestri Fornelli.

Both flora and fauna in the island have been extremely generous and rich. The latter it’s particualrly interesting because it presents many dying species considered by scientists as an excellent, important platform to study on. So, a visit in the National Park can save several chances to see many dying species, most of wich are already extinguished in other areas of the Earth such as: witish donkeys, mouflons, sardinian partridges, hares, sardinian discoglossids, turtles, phalacrocorax carbo, peregrin hawks, emerald toads, viperous grass snakes and many others.

The Park also presents wonderful naturalistic areas such as Cala d’Arena beach in the north and Cala Sant’ Andrea in the south.
Visits are limited in number, so booking has to be made in advance. Departures are planned from the harbour of Stintino.

Stintino
Stintino, a well known mediterranean touristic village, was founded by the Asinara inhabitants in 1885 to coincide with the creation of the penal colony. The old part of the village is still easily referable to the fishermen community who founded it. Some interesting, original architectonical aspect can be seen in the oldest part of the village which rises on a peninsula between two deep inlets.
Its economy is based on tourism and fishing, mostly lobster fishing. Once here are worth to be visited the wonderful beaches of the old salt pans and la Pelosa, both dominated by the old, perfectly maintained, spanish towers. Stintino, located in the north west of Sardinia, it’s 34 km. far away from Porto Torres and can be easily reached thanks to an excellent bus service.
